eye surgery
Yesterday, Brian had eye surgery to fix a detached retina that he got from a elbow to his eye while playing basketball. We checked into the hospital at around 8:30 am. The surgery was scheduled to be at 12:30 pm. However, due to complications with the Doctor's first surgery, Brian's surgery was postponed until about 5:00 pm. It seemed like we were waiting for ever. Brian couldn't have anything to eat or drink past midnight the following night, and was thirsty and starving! At first the doctor was considering doing the surgery with Brian awake under local anesthesia, but since the surgery can be quite uncomfortable while awake ( like get your wisdom teeth pulled and being awake, even though your mouth is numb, you can still sense pulling and tugging!) the doctor decided to put Brian to sleep. The surgery took about an hour, then Brian had to rest in the hospital for another 2 hours. Today, Brian had his post-op visit, it went well. However, to help the eye heal he has to lie flat on his back, with the exception of bathroom breaks and eating, until Monday. Not to fun! He also has to wear an eye patch until Monday. Needless to say, the next time Brian plays basketball he will be wearing protective eye glasses!

weekend trip
This past weekend Brian and I took a little vacation to Natchitoches, Louisiana. It is the oldest settlement in Louisiana , and the Cane river runs through the town. It is a national heritage area and really takes you back in time. We stayed at an old southern mansion that has been converted to a bed and breakfast. It was beautiful and the breakfasts were delicious! We were able to see lots historic sites, eat some good cajun food, and got to tour several old plantation homes. For those looking for a weekend getaway without the kids, I would highly recommend this neat little town.
